about

Yep Roc Records is proud to release Spooked, a collaboration by English singer-songwriter/eccentric Robyn Hitchcock and acclaimed Americana duo Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Over Hitchcock's long and varied career - from his punk-era roots with the Soft Boys and their Syd Barrett-esque; psychedelic pop, his solo releases and albums with the Egyptians - the songsmith, artist and actor (he's in Jonathan Demme's remake of The Manchurian Candidate) never fails to delight with a carefully turned phrase or a perfect musical moment. The idea for the album was sown during a Welch/Rawlings London performance attended by Robyn and his wife, Says Robyn: "It was a brilliant affair; Gillian and David walked on stage carrying their guitars and never once used pick-ups on them. They played music that seemed to come from no particular era, but was rooted back centuries ago." A post-show conversation revealed the duo to be long-time Hitchcock fans (they'd had him sign an album in the early '80s!) and a friendship was struck up, with plans to record if the opportunity arose. Finding himself with a "fresh catch of songs thrashing in my notebook" and a cache of Dylan songs dancing in his head, Robyn joined Gillian and David at Nashville's Woodland Studios and let the tape - and the music -- roll. Naturally. Says Robyn: "We sat in a cluster by the studio window, singing and playing live, using neither headphones nor pick-ups. Nobody even counted the songs in; we always started playing together, and the tape always seemed to be rolling. It was like a child's drawing of a recording session. For me it was an extraordinarily good dream. To sit there with people I admired but had barely met, and to so quickly feel natural playing music with them was something rare indeed." After listening to Spooked; we think you'll agree.
